The Top 9 Myth's in Hairdressing

The real truth behind 9 of the biggest hairdressing myths, we have came across

It’s certainly no secret that the salon is the best place to go for the hot gossip and all the info on the latest trends, but have you ever heard something and sat back in your chair and wondered to yourself…..surely that cant be right?
Well I’m here to shed some light on some of the biggest hairdressing myths we have encountered at Ataraxia.

1, Cutting your hair makes it grow quicker- FALSE
Cutting your hair does not make it grow quicker, however the reason we suggest cutting your hair every 6-8weeks is because it removes split ends. When not removed, split ends will travel further up the hair shaft snapping and breaking leaving your hair shorter and shorter. By removing these ends you are ensuring that you will keep the length that you have grown and this in turn will lead to a quicker growth process in the long run.

2, Colour takes better on dirty hair- FALSE
Colour takes better on clean hair without any product build up, however having colour applied after a fresh shampoo can sometimes cause irritation due to the shampoo removing all the oils protecting the scalp.
It is best to attend your hair appointment smack bang in the middle of your hair washing cycle.

3, Pulling your grey hair makes more grow- FALSE

No, pulling out those cheeky little sparklies does not mean that they will come back in multiples. Although we still strongly suggest you leave them until your next hair appointment because plucking your hair can possibly destroy the hair follicle which means that it can lead to bald patches… and I know what I would rather.

4, Conditioner makes your hair greasy- FALSE

Conditioning your hair is highly beneficial, and not to blame for greasy hair. In fact, especially in the summer months, certain types of hair tend to become very dry. Too much sebum, a type of oil your body naturally produces, is the cause of your buildup and greasy hair. Conditioning your hair is a MUST to prevent hair damage and breakage.

5, Wearing a hat can cause balding- FALSE
Let’s get the facts straight; balding is not a casualty of wearing a hat. This misconception was probably brought on by the fact that many bald individuals choose to wear a hat and people decided to relate one to the other

6, Split ends can be repaired- FALSE
Oh honey’s how I wish this was true, but the truth is once its split its split-remove it.
Its just that simple.

7, Colour will lighten Colour- FALSE
This is literally the most common misconception about hair colour. So common, that I wrote an entire 3 blogs about (FROM DARK TO THE LIGHT SIDE). I do not want to go into all the details about it here, so if you want more information, please read those blogs.

But just know that colour will not lift previously coloured hair. If you coloured your hair dark brown and then put light brown over it, it will stay dark brown. You must lighten the colour first or let it grow out. Confusing? Just read the other blogs…

8, Going outside with wet hair will make you sick- FASLE

One of the most misconceived hair myths around, and no doubt, you have heard it before. Your mum used to make sure your hair was completely dry before you walked outside in the morning, so you didn’t get sick. However, the common cold is caused by a virus. So unless someone coughs on you while your hair is wet, it won’t do much to get you sick.
(Don’t tell your mum we said that though)

9, Your hair changes every 7 years- FACT

Ever wonder why during your younger years your hair might have been pin straight or super curly and as the years progressed the texture changed? Getting either more unruly or tamer? Hair most commonly gets tamer or as years progress.

Throughout your lifetime your hair goes through growth cycles; the most common timeframe being 4-7 years.

Hair growth is a cyclical process that consists of 3 phases.

Phase 1 Anagen: This is the phase where your hair is actively growing. New hair forms and pushes out the hair that has stopped growing. This is the phase that lasts from 4-7 years.

Phase 2 Catagen: At this stage hair growth ceases and lasts from 2-3 weeks.

Phase 3 Telogen: A 100 day phase, where your hair is at is rest point and has completely formed.

As you age, your hair will go through transformations from both this cyclical process and from styling it and using treatments and hair products
