Ok so, its time to clean up your act!
I was speaking to a girlfriend the other day on the phone, discussing various products she had tried on her hair you know the usual, what she felt weighed her hair down and what didn’t, what made her more prone to oil and what products she was vibing at the moment.
While chatting away (talking shit) we got onto the discussion of shampooing, blowdrying brushes, electrical tools all that jazz and we started to talk about how she had just cleaned her hairbrush.
Now this got me thinking- How many women and men know-
1) To clean your brush
2) How to clean your brush
3) Why and how often you should clean your brush
In salon we constantly dehair, clean and sanitize our equipment, brushes and combs included. How many of our clients are doing the same?
A few weeks back I wrote a blog post about how to properly shampoo your hair, however it has now occurred to me if you haven’t cleaned your brush in the last 6months or so all of the perfect step following and good techniques you have learnt have just been shit on (excuse my French) with one run through of that brush!
Why Should I Clean My Hairbrush?
First, it is a hygiene issue. Any brush or tool that you use on your skin or hair needs to be cleaned regularly! Not only does hair and product build up on your hairbrush over time, but it also accumulates dead skin cells, dust mites, lint, dust, and the natural oils from your hair. That build-up can turn your hairbrush into a breeding ground for bacteria and yeast, and that is disgusting am I right?
No one wants to brush bacteria, yeast, and other nastiness into their hair surely?
Another reason to clean your hairbrush regularly is to keep your hair looking fabulous! If you use a hairbrush that’s covered in hair, product, and other oily gunk, you’ll be brushing those oils into your clean hair. So instead of leaving your hair looking silky soft, brushing your hair with a dirty brush can actually leave your hair looking less clean than when you started.
How To Clean Your Hairbrush
You should remove any hair that’s trapped in your hairbrush once a week. Use a pair of scissors, a thin comb, or even a bamboo skewer to lift the hair out.
In addition to weekly hair removal, you should wash your brush thoroughly about once a month.
Shampoo your hairbrush to remove dirt, oil, and any built-up hair products. Holding the handle, swirl the head of the brush around in a bowl of warm water. Next, put a few drops of gentle shampoo on the bristles of a toothbrush and use the toothbrush to scrub the bristles and base of the hairbrush. Thoroughly rinse the brush clean and lay it flat down to dry.
