Yes, It’s True you Need to Start Cleaning Your Straightener Because It Changes Everything

Ok so, you probably know the basic rules of using a hair straightener, like always spray a heat protectant before styling your hair, and do not have the straightener at full heat when styling the finer hair around your face. And while you probably abide by these rules already, you are likely neglecting one very important yet rather tedious rule: Clean your straightener.

To make sure you know how to do this properly I have put together some information to help you with the process.

Considering the amount of heat protectant and styling product we use day to day, it is only natural that our styling tools will acquire some build-up especially our hair straightener’s. The cleaner the iron, the better the styling and the better the overall outcome.

1. Heat Your Flatiron
To begin, turn your straightener on the lowest setting and let it heat up. This is a very important step, as the heat aids in loosening up product build-up on the plates, making it easier to clean. Once it is sufficiently warm, unplug the iron, and double-check to make sure it is not connected to the outlet.

2. Gather Your Supplies

While your straightener is heating up, grab a soft towel and either warm water or rubbing alcohol (for a deeper clean).

3. Clean your plates
While performing this step, it is very important to be mindful of how you are cleaning so as not to burn yourself on the warm plates. With that said, grab your unplugged iron, and gently scrub the plates with a towel or cotton swabs dipped in rubbing alcohol or warm water. Make sure not to scrub too hard, as this can damage the plates.

4. Repeat Once A Month

The more build-up, the less evenly your plates will heat up and the harder it will be to style your hair. To prevent this, clean your iron once a month. However, if you are frequently using a lot of product, it may be beneficial to clean your plates after each use.
